Irish Container Home

Category: Architecture

Year: Present-2020

Overview:  The architects employed a completely new approach for the area, designing the first modern shipping container construction in Northern Ireland. They used 4 containers in total to create two large cantilever forms. The exterior of the residence is covered with dark gray powder-coated expanded metal sheets (used for the upper level) and pre-rusted Corten steel (for the lower level).

The containers were insulated and waterproofed to prevent rust and they were used to create a structure that acts like a sculpture but also blends in with the surroundings. The building complements the forms and colors found in the local area.

The desire was to create a completely different atmosphere between the two levels. The layout takes advantage of the views over the woodland, the nearby river and the distant mountains. There are two entry points. One is an orange door on the ground level and the primary entrance is on the upper floor.

The upper level contains a galley and an open plan which houses the living and dining spaces and the kitchen. There are also two balconies to the South and West and a hidden door that leads into a bedroom. In total, the house has three bedrooms.

Year: Present – 2020

Overview: The 5,200 square foot house was built with a selection of materials chosen to reflect the regional landscape: quarry stone and locally-sources teak wood which are both resistant to weather variations and erosion. One of the main priorities was to allow the house to capture the stunning views of the ocean. However, because of the considerable slope and the tall building between the land and the shore, that proved to be a challenge. The solution for the problem was to relocate the entrance, the social areas and the infinity pool on the middle level of the three-storey structure. This way the incredible scenery can be admired without any obstructions and it feels like the ocean is at their doorstep.

Overview: At the entrance of the landmark city of Mashhad, Iran, this “living architecture” is inspired by the birds inhabiting the city’s Imam Reza shrine, where tourists flock to take in the architecture & avian dwellers. Driving visitors are greeted by a 28 meter high pillar with moving wings powered when incoming vehicles drive over a subtle bump connected to system of cables & gears. Nestled amidst the ancient backdrop, this modern marvel stands out as both a tribute to one of the city’s historic attractions & a symbol of its importance in the world of tomorrow.
